When speaking of the gastronomy in Vrbnik, we must not leave out žlahtina, a white wine made from the eponymous variety with a designation of origin. Žlahtina inherited its name from the old Slavic adjective žlahten describing something precious or noble. The wine is light, charming, with an alcohol content of about 11,5 %, crystal clear and golden in color. It is recommended to drink it while young, as one can still taste the primary fruity and floral aromas, and it should be chilled to 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. The wine found the best conditions for growth in the favorable climate of the protected position of Vrbnik`s field, planted deep into the fresh fertile soil, close to the sea and the particularities of the surrounding dry stone wall covered with aromatic Mediterranean herbs. Žlahtina has traveled the world probably more than the most active international travelers. The immigrants would carry a bottle to their home away from home and open it on the day when nostalgia for the “OLD COUNTRY” was too overwhelming. In the last 30 years, žlahtina has found its place on wine lists of prestigious catering houses and wine shops.
